    Model Behaviour: May Lindstrom sEz...

    tchad magazine

way back in february, i had the chance to shoot an editorial for tchad magazine featuring actor shawn ashmore (of "x-men" fame... scans coming soon).

the highlight of that experience? the dynamic hair & makeup duo of may lindstrom and juxta dunn [just JUXTA, if you're nasty]. equipped with organic, holisitic, 100% GREEN makeup, i felt like i was at the spa as opposed to sitting in a hair & makeup chair for a shoot.

flash forward to 3 months later and i'm shooting with may & juxta again! this time, i left the experience with a small take-away: a powder-to-creme face mask made of bamboo charcoal, cocoa, sea salts, moroccan clay, amazonian clay, & vitamin c.

of course, i simply had to experiment with it-- and of course i had to document the experience!

    step one: application-

i mixed 1/3 of the powdery contents with water to create a chocolate mousse-like creme and applied it over my entire face. naturally, the only thing to do was smoke a cigarette whilst waiting for the mask to dry.

    step 2: let it settle

the maximum amount of time to wear the mask? approximately one hour. when first applied it feels all tingly. then, like most masks, it will give you that "i-feel-like-i-need-to-pour-an-entire-bottle-of-lotion-on-my-face" sensation. this would be a good time to give yourself a pedicure or engage in other activities that don't involve moving your mouth.

    step 3: rinse & go!

my macbook camera can't possibly do it justice, but my face feels smoother than a baby's bottom and my inner glow is shining through every pore (yes, i know it sounds corny, but i'm serious)!

that fresh and clean feeling without the harsh chemicals you'll find in your over-the-counter beauty products? yes, please and thank you!

sadly, may's amazing face mask won't make wearing those one-size-too-small pvc thigh high platforms and spiked agent provocateur corset at the wb gala i'm modeling in tonight any easier/more comfortable... but at least my face has the feel-goods!

Model Behaviour [the Grace Jones edition]

q: what do you get when you mash together robin black: magazine editor/photographer and makeup artist extraordinaire, brett bailey: haute couture [cyber-]stylist, and oscar lima: designer du jour?

a: an unending well of amazingness

step 2? throw me into that mix. then add some outrageous metal headpieces, dresses fit for the haus of gaga (no, really, oscar is her costume designer), and makeup that would make miss jones herself swear she'd seen that face before... now, you've got the cover of the new tough's issue #3...!

you see, on super bowl sunday, instead of toting chips & dip to someone's house for a day of beer and football, i was picked up at approximately 1:15pm by a self-described "asian girl with tattoos". gorgeous, spunky, and carrying bags of health food snacks (well, if you want to call the vegan chocolate chip cookies we annihilated "healthy"...), she wore a simple chain around her neck that said "ms black"-- a complete contradiction as this girl is anything but simple...

hours later, i headed to work with a plastic baggy full of polaroids, feeling higher than a skid row crackhead. we had just made magic. if this is how it starts (my dream, that is)-- with robin and oscar and brett and grace jones makeup and 4 hours of listening to "warm leatherette" and "nightclubbing" whilst growling at the camera... if this is how it starts then i look forward to the climb...

the issue is coming soon. have fun with these crazy polaroids robin snapped for fun in the meantime! oh, and don't forget to check out issues #1 and #2 of the new tough online!

pssssst! check out this article on robin & the new tough in dazed digital!

    Body Issues...? ...!

    naomi y kate

body and size issues seem to be a trending topic in the editorial world these days. i, for one, am not complaining. and no, not because i enjoy looking at naked women. i enjoy the fact that america seems to be embracing and celebrating the female body as art. there is nothing perverse, deviant, or pornographic about these editorials. taking your clothes off is sexy, it's beautiful, it's art.

besides, if you looked as good as naomi campbell at 39, you'd deserve to be celebrated too, non?

I think men and women alike can agree: viva la body issue! [thank you, mert & marcus!]
