“I feel good about myself today, but not just because of my job. I think it’s more because I took back the control over my own health, and I accepted the fact that my silhouette will never match up with the image of beauty with which we are constantly bombarded.”

-Tara Lynn, in the “Curvy” issue of French Elle

just to be clear, i love this. i love spreads on the glory of the curvy girl...

but i will say this: what about us girls that aren’t naturally waif-thin, but aren’t a natural size 12 either? and no, not even a size 6. I’m talking about the size 4 girl, with a 25 inch waist and thick thighs bestowed upon her by the African queens from which she descends. where does she fit in? because when my options are to either lose 10-15 so that my thighs fit into sample size, or gain 30 because the standard of beauty in this industry is "unfair and unreasonable"… i’m sure which one you can guess i might choose, right?

    kirkwood rodarte

nicholas kirkwood x rodarte... match made in shoe HEAVEN! my favourites? the lavender-heeled beauties below. there is something deliciously grotesque about the "dripping candle wax + reptilian texture" mix... these shoes are for play. loads and loads of fashion-forward play...

Model Behaviour [the Grace Jones edition]

q: what do you get when you mash together robin black: magazine editor/photographer and makeup artist extraordinaire, brett bailey: haute couture [cyber-]stylist, and oscar lima: designer du jour?

a: an unending well of amazingness

step 2? throw me into that mix. then add some outrageous metal headpieces, dresses fit for the haus of gaga (no, really, oscar is her costume designer), and makeup that would make miss jones herself swear she'd seen that face before... now, you've got the cover of the new tough's issue #3...!

you see, on super bowl sunday, instead of toting chips & dip to someone's house for a day of beer and football, i was picked up at approximately 1:15pm by a self-described "asian girl with tattoos". gorgeous, spunky, and carrying bags of health food snacks (well, if you want to call the vegan chocolate chip cookies we annihilated "healthy"...), she wore a simple chain around her neck that said "ms black"-- a complete contradiction as this girl is anything but simple...

hours later, i headed to work with a plastic baggy full of polaroids, feeling higher than a skid row crackhead. we had just made magic. if this is how it starts (my dream, that is)-- with robin and oscar and brett and grace jones makeup and 4 hours of listening to "warm leatherette" and "nightclubbing" whilst growling at the camera... if this is how it starts then i look forward to the climb...

the issue is coming soon. have fun with these crazy polaroids robin snapped for fun in the meantime! oh, and don't forget to check out issues #1 and #2 of the new tough online!

pssssst! check out this article on robin & the new tough in dazed digital!

    Work ... Hard?

    vice blue suit

spotted: a vice magazine editorial that gives you way more than just an eyeful of fashion...

i have to wonder who the target audience of this editorial is. while it may not be displeasing to the female eye, i'm sure that heterosexual male readers could have gone without seeing impeccably dressed male models with boners. or maybe that was the whole angle: let's make them so uncomfortable that they will focus intently on the sartorial decisions of the shoot's stylist in an effort to avoid the eye-catching crotch area of the model at all costs...?

i also have to wonder: are those real erections?? i need answers, vice!

oh, and in case you were wondering, all of the male models are wearing tom ford for men cologne. maybe that is to indicate to us that the models were inspired by thoughts of the cologne lodged between the breasts, snatch (version a and version b), or bum of one of the models from those raunchy, terry richardson-shot ads from back in '07??

anyway, i, for one, am simultaneously perplexed and fascinated. thus, i have attached the rest of the shoot's images below:
